Workshop :
Welfare Reforms: the Impact of the June 2010 BudgetDraft Report Word | PDF
Norman Mackenzie,Senior Research Officer (Equality & Diversity)in East Renfrewshire Community and Health Care Partnership (CHCP), talked about the impact of proposed changes in 2013 to Disability Living Allowance . He posed 4 questions.
- How do we make sure that disabled people have access to accurate and up-to-date information, advice, advocacy and representation?
- How do we support and encourage people to something if benefits are stopped or changed rather than just accepting change and making do?
- How do we promote the rights of disabled people to gain meaningful employment
- How do we support disabled people to have their voice heard at national and local levels?
Action Points
- Identify training needs for ERDWN members to help them keep up to-date and to share training costs.
- Simple flow diagram on what to if benefits changed or stopped to encourage individuals to appeal rather than accept. Disseminate as widely as possible - electronically, at Roadshows (should we hold one ourselves or just tag onto what is already going on?), and other events. Remember not everyone has access to Internet.
- Raise awareness about with employers and disabled people about employment campaigns such as "Give us a Chance"
- Support disabled people to lobby collectively about changes to welfare and care services.
